A police chase ended in tragedy in Summit Township, Jackson County when police could not save a driver trapped in a fiery crash.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. Monday on Francis Street near Trumble Street.

An officer pulled a car over at Francis and Overhill, but as soon as the officer walked up to the silver SUV, the driver took off.

A sliver SUV tried eluding police, traveling south on Francis, reaching speeds of over 100 mph, tried to cross over the median and lost control of his vehicle and hit a large oak tree at the corner of Francis Street and Trumble Street.

The officer got to the scene of the accident as fast as she could and tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but the flames were too intense.

The driver was pinned in the vehicle which became fully ablaze.

Explosions coming from the vehicle was believed to be ammunition.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Jackson Fire and Jackson Community Ambulance responded.
