On Friday, August 12 at approximately 7 pm. Deputies responded to the 5500 block of Clarklake Rd. in Napoleon Township following up on are quest from Napoleon Township Police for assistance. The original call was for a welfare check on a woman at the residence who had not been seen since August 6th.

Upon arrival at the residence deputies observed a female not moving, possibly injured.

A male subject was also observed inside the residence but refused to come to the door or even engage in a conversation with responding officers. The male subject, later identified as Roger Sanford, was known by law enforcement from previous incidents and had a history of mental illness. He was also known to be in possession of firearms.

Given these factors the joint city-county strategic response team was activated to assist. During this time there were repeated efforts to communicate with Sanford.

Eventually, after an extended period of time entry was made to the residence and it was discovered that both Roger Leon Sanford (62years of age) and Margaret Jean Sanford (73 years of age) were deceased.

Margaret had been deceased for several days and Roger had taken his own life during the standoff.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
