At 11:08 p.m. Hillsdale County 911 dispatched Hillsdale City Fire Department and Hillsdale Police Department for a structure fire on Wolcott Street between State Street and River Street.

As emergency personnel arrived, the attached garage on the two story house was fully involved and quickly spreading to the rest of the house.

Firefighters were able to rescue a man from the home. He was transported to Hillsdale Hospital by Reading Emergency Unit. Unfortunately the victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Hillsdale Township Fire Department and Jonesville Fire Department, Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department were called in to assist.

Firefighters worked quickly to put out the blaze. Multiple explosions could be heard during the course of the fire.

The fire was under control just before midnight. The house appeared to be a total loss.

Earlier that day around 9:00 p.m., a resident who lives just around the corner on River Street called 911 after seeing two sports cars slowly drive past their house, then turn on Wolcott Street, followed by what they thought were several gunshots.

However, a neighbor told us that the man whose house caught fire liked to light off fireworks and had been earlier that day.

We’ll update this post as more information becomes available.
