FREMONT — A single vehicle crash on the Indiana Toll Road just west of I-69 in Steuben County killed one person and injured 5 others yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 4:25 PM on Sunday, November 13th near mile marker 142.

According to Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Williams, a 2001 GMC Yukon was traveling eastbound in the area of the 142 mile marker, when it traveled from the left lane, across the right lane and off the south side of the road.

The vehicle then struck a guardrail before rolling onto its driver side. A 32 year old female passenger from Ohio, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner’s Office. Four others from the vehicle were transported via ambulance to a local hospital and a fifth was flown via Samaritan to a Fort Wayne hospital.

At this time, the crash is still under investigation and all identities are being withheld until family notifications have been made. More information will be provided when it becomes available to release. Williams was assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff Department, Steuben County EMS, Samaritan Air Ambulance, Fremont Fire Department and the Steuben County Coroner’s Office.
