EATON RAPIDS – Police have arrested one man in connection with a series of fires and break-ins that occurred in Eaton Rapids early Thursday morning.

At approximately 1:49 a.m. Thursday, March 2nd the Eaton Rapids Police and Fire Department was dispatched to the 600 block of Water Street for an unknown fire. A small shed had burned down in the rear yard of a residence.

Officers tracked shoe prints leading from the shed to Chester Street, about two blocks away, where a garage was on fire. Fire personnel responded to that scene.

At 2:00 a.m. Adrian’s K-9 Tripp and his handler Sgt Jack Williamson responded to assist. K-9 Tripp successfully tracked the suspect from the scene of the arson to a residence where a 24-year-old male was taken into custody without incident.

While police were investigating the fire scenes, officers were dispatched to two businesses in the 100 block of S. Main St. regarding breaking and entering complaints. At one of the scenes a suspect attempted, unsuccessfully, to break in the door of a business. At the other scene, a small fire had been started and extinguished in the building. A fifth crime scene was reported at Chester St. where a vehicle was broken into.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police assisted with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Paul Creger or Off. Dan Paling at 517-663-8118.
