STURGIS, Mich – A Three Rivers man is being charged with open murder after causing a fatal crash while under the influence of drugs in Sturgis on Thursday.

The crash happened at the intersection of M-66 & W South St just after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4th.

Authorities say it was a 3-vehicle crash, which started when two vehicles crashed head-on and a third vehicle crash into one of the vehicles involved in the first crash.

It took Sturgis Fire Department nearly an hour to extricate three victims from the first two vehicles. The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured.

The driver in the vehicle that caused the crash, 36-year-old Paul Michael Middling of Three Rivers, was transported to Sturgis Hospital. He is in stable condition.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 46-year-old Sturgis man, was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He has died from his injuries.

The passenger in that vehicle, a 10-year-old girl, was transported to the Pediatric Trauma unit at Bronson. She is in serious condition.

Police are charging Paul Michael Middling with open murder, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and absconding parole.

The crash is under investigation by the Sturgis Police.
