ATHENS TWP – A landlord-tenant dispute led to the seizure of 21 roosters and 4 hens involved in an alleged cockfighting ring in Calhoun County.

Around noon on Friday, October 13th, 2017 the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the 3000 block of 3 ½ Mile Road in Athens Township for a landlord-tenant dispute.

Once deputies arrived they were informed of animal cruelty and cockfighting taking place at the property.

Authorities obtained a search warrant and the CCSD Animal Control Division in conjunction with the Battle Creek City Police Department ACO Division seized 21 roosters and 4 hens along with other evidence indicative of animal cruelty and cockfighting.

All birds were transported to the Battle Creek Animal Shelter for housing.

A 46-year-old Athens man is the focus of this investigation. He was not present during the seizure.

The investigation remains open and criminal charges are expected.
